        Halford Hewitt 2014
A team of Old St Beghian golfers once again descended on the Kent coast, along with teams from 63 other Public Schools to play in this year’s Halford Hewitt. St Bees were drawn to play Oundle in the 1st round at Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club in Deal. This year we were delighted to be joined by two “new” Old St Beghian golfers, Jeff Ellis, and winner of the Critchley Cup, John Woodhouse. Both proved to be great additions to the side both on and off the course.
We approached the Thursday lunchtime tee time with some optimism, having beaten Oundle two years previously at the same stage of the event, however we were wary because the previous match had been extremely close and revenge would no doubt be on the mind of the opposition. The weather remained dry all week and blue skies with a slight breeze made for great golfing conditions.
Despite our best efforts St Bees were beaten by 4 matches to 1, with all losing matches ending on either the 16th or 17th green, so despite the score it was a relatively close encounter.
Halford Hewitt 1st Round Result: Oundle beat St Bees by 4 matches to 1.

Princes Plate - St Bees vs Liverpool
The following day all Hewitt 1st round “runners-up” play in a 32 team knockout tournament made up of six-man teams containing three foursomes pairs. We were drawn to play against Liverpool, a relatively strong school with whom we had little recent history. Despite this we approached the encounter with some optimism as matches are played over only three pairings. Results are determined much more by the golf on the day as opposed to the overall strength of the team (it is much harder to conduct a “giant killing” in the Hewitt itself with matches decided with five pairings).
In match 1, the ever dependable St Bees pairing of Adrian Peckitt and Andrew Deal got off to a great start, winning their game 3 and 2.
In Match 2, James Doggett played with Andrew Goodwin. In a relatively tight match the pair found themselves all square with two to play. St Bees lost the 17th and a solid four from Liverpool down the last was enough to secure the match.
          St Bees lost 1 down.
In Match 3, Andy Crummey and John Currey played in an extremely tight match, but found themselves one up playing the last. A good four from Liverpool on 18 could not be matched and the match finished all square through 18. With the two previous matches having finished, the tie stood at one match each and extra holes were required. On the first, Liverpool made a solid four, which could not be matched by St Bees. St Bees lost, 1 down after 19 holes.
A close match! Let’s hope for better luck next year.
Liverpool beat St Bees by 2 matches to 1.
